Education & Research

At Boulder Valley Honey, it's important that we continue to keep as up to date as possible regarding honeybee health, varroa mites, and impending tropi (Tropilaelaps mercedesae) mites. Since 2019, we have consulted as the head beekeepers for the University of Colorado's BioFrontiers Institute. From building systems to study honeycomb formation with Dr. Orit Peleg to travelling deep into the Bangladesh Sundarbans with Dr. Samuel Ramsey and National Geographic to study tropi mites, we love to learn about bees!
In 2025, Boulder Valley Honey conducted research in collaboration with Drs. Seth Davis and John Mola of CSU to better understand the interactions between honeybees and wild bees. W
hile this is a growing area of interest, data illuminating this topic is few and far between. With this in mind, we deployed several dozen of our hives in high-alpine to generate data, which are awaiting formal publication.
In addition to our formal laboratory research, we manage beehives for Boulder's farming non-profit Growing Gardens. This organization champions regenerative urban agriculture, and offers beekeeping classes for young farmers - exactly where we all began our journey as professional beekeepers. Boulder Valley Honey leads these hands-on beekeeping classes several times a year, and if you know a young person in your life that could benefit see the class schedule at Growing Garden's Events!
If you're in need of a bit of help, or interested in utilizing professional testing procedures in your own beehives, please contact us to book a beehive consultation in your hives!
